Katie Moore is helping a Nahuatl woman see that the stories going around several villages are just “pure lies.” Several families in the Nahuatl village where Katie lives have been taking part in a ceremony to “walk their dead relatives to the next life.”
Following the directions of the witchdoctor, they feed tortillas to the spirit of the deceased, make a pile of belongings that might be needed on the spirits’ journey, and then saddle a cow and kill it in order to provide transportation into the afterlife. They fear that if they do not take part in this ceremony, the spirit will stay around and make people sick.
A woman from another village came to visit during the ceremony and told Katie about a rumor going around that God wants people to change the kind of clothes they wear. People are saying that if you don’t wear a certain kind of cloth God will punish you. Some of the ladies changed the skirts they wore but were told that even your underwear could burn if you don’t make a complete change.
When the lady asked Katie what she thought, Katie said that it reminded her of a rumor that the world would end on January 1, and yet here we are in May. Some said that animals would eat those that didn’t wear the right clothes. That didn’t happen.
The lady replied, “I guess it’s all pure lies, right?”
These lies produce fear and worry and bondage. Pray that the missionary team ministering among the Nahuatl people will learn the culture and language and be able to present Firm Foundation Bible lessons. Pray that God will prepare the hearts of the Nahuatls to hear and accept the message of salvation and that they will be freed from the lies that are burdening their hearts.
